TV Writers

Filed under: Business Lessons • Comments: 2

It seems like all of the really cool girls on TV are writers. Carrie Bradshaw comes to mind. They wake up in the middle of the day, have leisurly breakfasts & then pen a few words about what happened at the club the night before. Then they have enough money to buy lots of amazing shoes. Maybe they will have one episode devoted to writer’s block but in general their profession isn’t mentioned all that much. It makes writing look easy.

I am trying to make it as a writer & I can tell you that this is not the case. Granted, I’m just into writing web content at the moment. TV doesn’t show the hours & hours of work. It doesn’t show researching topics that you really don’t care about. It doesn’t show earning mere pennies for something you put your heart into. It doesn’t show rejection e-mails. It definitely doesn’t show how competitive & uncertain everything is. It’s probably good that TV doesn’t show all of that or there would be a lot less writers.

I told you so

Cartoons look really easy to draw until you actually try it. I give it a go whenever I have lots of promotional pens handy. I remember a famous cartoonist talking about how they do the Sunday cartoons. They have to submit these earlier than the rest of the cartoons because of special ink or something. I don’t remember why exactly. This breaks up the story line. So, on Sunday, unless the cartoonist is really prepared, they often just run a really funny, random piece.

I wrote a letter to The Office a few weeks ago asking them to lose the plot. They had a fantastic opportunity to do so after the Super Bowl & they really shined. I laughed…out loud. There wasn’t all of the Angela/Andy/Dwight drama. I guess they couldn’t use their regular train of thought because not everyone would be tuning in & it was a longer episode. I wish they could all be Sunday cartoons.

Lessons learned from not watching 24

Filed under: Business Lessons • Comments: 1

I do not watch the hit TV show 24. All I know about it is that every time the commercial comes on it shows Jack Bauer sweating & trying to save the world & then there are explosions. I have learned a lot just from those few snippets. Sometimes, it feels like my business is just ruined.

Like today, one of my blogs was not blogging. I felt the pressure. The entire world was going to hate me if I didn’t get things up & running again. I would lose my readership & then I’d never be able to afford door hardware. It was like a clock was ticking. Then, I took a few deep breathes. It’s just a blog. I focused enough to read about my problem & fix it. I tried to stay cool & calm like Jack Bauer.
