No One Likes to Feel Alone

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

The other interesting thing that I found during the James Frey/Oprah interview was his constant use of the word “we”. It was always “we” decided not to shop the book as fiction. He almost never used singular pronouns. I think, especially when people are in trouble, they use the word “we” to make themselves feel less alone and possibly shoulder less of the blame. It made me slightly sad that maybe there was no “we” for this man that felt that he had been to a “public stoning” after his original harsh interview with Oprah. What do you think?

Lessons Learned from James Frey

I didn’t read his book A Million Little Pieces when it came out. I think I was busier with fashion and spent time looking at steve madden shoes. I knew about the scandal and by that time the book wasn’t important enough to stand out in my “to be read” list. However, I did watch his interview with Oprah and I found it so interesting that he had never watched the interview that he had done with Oprah when his whole world exploded. What was even more interesting was that Oprah said she didn’t watch it either at the time, but I think she said she did watch it right before the second interview years later. I always find it ironic when the people who make TV don’t even watch the final versions of it. I guess you’d really have to have a lot of trust in both your editing and production teams.

Easiest Ways to Cut Money

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

I watch a lot of Suze Orman/Til Debt Do Us Part financial shows. The first step is to always go over how much the person makes and how much they spend. Usually they have no idea on either account. However, I’ve noticed a pattern. Almost every single show recommends cutting down on eating out. Usually I think of people spending money on things like french maid costumes, mansions, Ferrari’s, or lavish lifestyles, not food. When you ask someone what they would do if they won the lottery they never say “Oh, I’d go out to eat 3 times a month”. It seems like even people who make $100,000 are told that they can’t afford to eat out. It kinda makes me chuckle because it just makes me think that almost no one can afford to eat out yet we all do.
