There’s Just No Helping

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

There were certain guests in the past few months of the Oprah show that taught me a valuable lesson: there’s no helping some people. It seemed like we heard from guests who had been on the Oprah show a lot: Fergie, The Judds, and Ocotomom. They all talked about how this time they had really “gotten it”; this time they were really putting their lives together. However, they’ve always said that. I only worry what will happen to them when Oprah isn’t there to help them anymore, even though Fergie will be on the OWN Network. Even though they all adamantly say that this time they have it all together I can’t help but wonder if it’s just something you say when you’re on the Oprah show.

How Oprah Changed the World

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

Through watching all of the different guests, I think the most brilliant thing she introduced was the idea of an “aha” moment. These revelations have come from people from all walks of life, some who initially I might have though to just be “bad people”. She brought to us the idea that people can actually change, they can have moments where things click, that will move every other aspect of their lives. That’s an invaluable life lesson. I also like the idea that it’s a talk show, which has really gone out of style. Now, it’s all about reality shows, which could be more correctly classified as “yelling shows”. Now I will spend that extra hour a day reading. If I want to know what conjugated linoleic acid is, I’ll go look it up. I think that would make Oprah happy.

Lessons from Sister Wives

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: 1

I haven’t learned a lot of life lessons from Sister Wives. I do live in Utah and now know that there are possibly a lot of polygamists who aren’t wearing the long dresses and braids in their hair.

However, my heart broke for this family when they decided to leave Utah. I thought “Ok, well now they’ll be able to stay together”. The season finale brought up something I hadn’t thought of though. These people were going to have to leave most of their belongings at least for now. Sure, I’d need new address plaques if I moved but I’d get to take my stuff with me. They couldn’t just throw it in 4 big moving trucks, because they had the whole drive to Vegas where the police could stop them if they knew what they were doing. I do agree with what one of the wives said that maybe they were a little bit naïve when they “came out”. I don’t think they were at all prepared for the possibility that they’d basically be run out of the state. They were just treating it as a wholly positive experience.
