Lessons learned from Julia Childs

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

I’ve wanted to see the movie Julie and Julia even though I can’t cook. I tuned into PBS early Saturday morning and an older Julia Child’s show was on. I learned that:

  • It only takes 20 seconds to make an omelet.
  • You can move the pan back and forth violently instead of folding the omelet with a spatula.
  • Today’s cooks and non cooks are over indulgent. I don’t know how many decorating shows I’ve seen where people do $60,000 kitchen remodels and then joke that maybe they will cook now. (Most of them never do.) Julia was cooking on an electric range with a non stick pan. She was using chopsticks instead of a whisk because that’s what she had handy.

Brooke Goes Green

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

A recent episode of Brooke Knows Best brought up my problem with the green movement. The usually non-descript roommate Ashley went on the warpath. Look if you want to wash your hands in toilet water fine. If you want to teach people to be environmentally friendly great. Start your own farm, grow organic vegetables get some cattle supplies.

However, when you are forcing it on people by cutting off their water sources when they are in the shower or only talking to people who use aluminum water bottles there is a problem. When you are a guest on someone’s TV show and riding on their fame and using their Dad to make appearances at your party, it’s not appropriate to do impressions of your benefactor’s carbon footprint. At some point she shifted from trying to help the environment to thinking she is better than everyone. It was so bad that Brooke didn’t even want to be her friend anymore. Please, take care of the environment. I will help, just try not to be too annoying about it.

Life Lesson Learned from Kate

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

If you are ever in Kate Gosselin’s kitchen do not go past the island. The ensuing yelling will act as weight loss supplements. I can understand why she had this rule when she had a smaller kitchen. It would be hard to cook and keep everyone safe with all those little kids as well as a camera crew. However, now she has a new house and a large remodeled kitchen.

I also found it funny that Jon & Kate both said they had to go through with a kitchen remodel during their separation because it was for the kids. Do the kids really care if they have new cabinets? Ok, back to my first rant. I think Kate just likes the personal space, her own domain and a rule that she can yell at people about. Just never go past the island in Kate’s kitchen. Don’t do it.
