Even I knew that Martha

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: 1

Usually just watching the Martha Stewart Show has me grateful that I don’t cook much because then I’d need serious weight loss pills. There is something about that woman that just always makes me feel inferior. Maybe it’s the fact that she has her own hens so she always has fresh eggs for baking. I had to laugh when I was watching her Christmas special. She excitedly pulled out an entire box of plain, cheap gift bows. You know the ones that look like this:

She then proceeded to cut them up & tell the audience that now they looked like poppies. They really just looked like cut up bows. Martha was absolutely delighted when she demonstrated how to pull off the paper backing so you can easily stick it to your present with the self adhesive backing. Apparently, she was the only one alive who didn’t know this. Overall, it was a weird segment. She must be trying to get her own line of gift bows or was stinting for Kmart.

Lessons learned from Barbara Walters

Filed under: Relationship Lessons • Comments: None

I’ve been watching Barbara Walters in several interviews as she pushes her book Audition. I have not read her book, but I’m not completely opposed to the idea of reading it. Last night she was on the Stephen Colbert Show & he put palm trees in the background & made the camera lense all soft & blurry. It looked exactly like The View & that made me giggle. She asked Stephen why he never came on the View & he said because he was scared. I don’t blame him I would never go on that show without safety equipment.

Barbara is arguably one of the most recognized anchors/interviewers ever. It was interesting to see that even she feels insecure. On Oprah she seemed to open up about Star Jones & Rosie O’Donnell, which was brave. When both of these women publicly left the show Barbara just played it off as, oh they went to pursue other things. Now we learn that it was just a huge mess, which most of us already knew. I think Barbara just always feels the need to say that everything is ok, everything is fine.

In every interview she seems to be asked why she called the book Audition. Doesn’t she already have the part? Barbara always replies that she was always auditioning for someone’s affection or job. Then she says something like “Tonight, on this show here with you, I’ve finally stopped auditioning.” That would be great if she didn’t say it in every single interview. I think she is still auditioning, just this time as an author, & that is sad.

What happens if you turn off the TV

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

Now, I’ve heard that it’s possible to press the power button on the remote & the picture will go away & the talking will stop. I’ve never actually tried it. Watching the commercials you would never know that we are in a recession.

I know that some parents only let their kids watch PBS so they won’t ask for all of the toys that they see. One of my favorite parts of Christmas time was the big Sears catalog. I didn’t watch a lot of TV so I’d eagerly await it’s arrival & then spend hours pouring over all of the toys. This is probably true for adults too. If we stopped watching TV would we be more content with what we have?
