Lessons learned from Iron Chef

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

Here are just a few lessons that I’ve learned from watching Iron Chef. (I don’t cook, I just watch the Food Network.)

1. Even cooking is cool if you add a guy who knows karate.

2. Usually for a person to stay skinny they use the best fat burners, exercise & watch their diets. I have no idea how Bobby Flay & Iron Chef Kat Kora stay so skinny.

3. Never make squid into ice cream. It is not inventive, it is just gross.

4. Just because you can cook fast doesn’t mean that your food will taste good.

5. Have a reliable team.

6. You can be the most amazing chef in the world & the judges will still make you feel like dirt.

Lessons learned from Top Design

Filed under: Business Lessons • Comments: 3

I really thought that Eddie was going to win Top Design. Granted, I didn’t like his designs, & neither did anyone else. However, he works for Martha Stewart, so he has to be good right? Besides the fact that he had this over the top, self obsessed attitude. It just seemed like destiny.

After Eddie was eliminated, I was sure that Preston would win. Sure, all of his rooms looked exactly the same. He described every room along the lines of Hotel Chic, but the judges loved his work.

I was wrong on both accounts. Nathan walked away with the prize. Granted, it seems bizarre to design a sitting room with no place to actually sit down, but he was different. His designs made people smile & laugh. Everything seemed so effortless with him. I have no doubt that Nathan could design anything from steel buildings to beach cottages & it would look flawless. This is a good business lesson as well. Just be who you are. Don’t copy other people. Even when someone works for Martha Stewart.

Voting tips from the West Wing

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

I always love the elections that took place on the West Wing. It showed how confused the voters are. Voting in itself should be a pretty easy concept. In reality, it’s not. I learned from watching the show that:

  • You can’t vote for the same canidate in two different columns.
  • You can’t rank the candidates in order of preferance.
  • Check every box just to be sure you aren’t just voting for just one canidate. The whole straight party ticket thing can be confusing. Better safe than sorry.
