Business lessons from Tori & Dean

Filed under: Business Lessons • Comments: None

I’ve been watching “Tori & Dean Inn Love”. I just want to yell FOCUS people just focus. In fact, I may have yelled that at the TV but don’t tell. If they make french fries, they suddenly want to open a fry shop. If they see a cute baby kilt they want to open a kid’s clothing store. While they are jumping from idea to idea they are losing site of the good ideas.

I’m not saying whether the Inn is a bad idea or not. However, I do think that Tori should be concentrating on home shopping networks as much as possible instead of on fry shops. I think they will have the same problems with these business ventures that they have with their inn. People will except to see Tori at her fry shop, or her baby boutique & they will have to have amazing overhead to have a place nice enough to fit Tori’s image. I admire their tenacity in building their empire, but focus people.

Lessons learned from Diagnosis Murder

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: 1

I’ve even learned a few lessons from “Diagnosis Murder” about relationships & life:

  • It’s possible to work with family. I don’t know how Dick Van Dyke balanced working with all of those family members all of those years, but it seemed to work. I can understand how if you’re so dedicated to your job & it takes up so much time you would want to have family around you. Wikipedia says the following family members worked on the show with him.

Dick Van Dyke and son Barry Van Dyke in the lead roles.
Dick’s brother, Jerry Van Dyke.
One of Dick’s daughters, Stacy Van Dyke.
Barry’s children: Carey Van Dyke, Shane Van Dyke, Wes Van Dyke, and Taryn Van Dyke.

  • I hate Scott Baio. I never watch the earlier episodes where he is a doctor. Yes, I still have some residual anger from watching “Scott Baio is 45 & single”.
  • Know when to quit. Diagnosis Murder definitely jumped the shark. I think the last episode that aired had the doctors hunting for aliens. They strayed away from the premise of the show which was diagnosing murder.

Jessica Simpson was Right

Filed under: Lessons • Comments: None

I’ll never forget an episode of “Newlyweds” that I watched where Nick & Jessica got in an argument about sheets. Jessica Simpson was vowing that it was worth the expense because the sheets would help her sleep better. At the time, I just rolled my eyes & thought “Ohhh celebrities, I wish I had the luxury of thinking like that”.

For years I’ve owned sheets that were pretty but had a threadcount of about 17. Ok so that’s an exaggeration, but they were pretty inexpensive. I finally broke down & bought a higher threadcount & I can see what she was talking about. I don’t know if they help me sleep better, but I do think they were a good investment. It’s one of life’s little luxuries that brings me joy.

There’s been a huge trend lately about “going green”. This has even caught on in Hollywood. Honestly, when I first heard about this I thought “I want to help the environment but it’s too expensive or I’ll have too give up all the little things that I love”. Dax stores proved me wrong. They have all kinds of products for the home. They have everything from eco-friendly bedroom furniture to Coyuchi organic flannel bed linens. The cotton used in this bedding was grown without pesticides. I didn’t realize that cotton consumes 25% of the world’s pesticide use. So I found some great products for the home without sacrificing luxury. I even got an education. Going green wasn’t as hard as I thought it would be.
