It’s all in the spin

Filed under: Business Lessons • Comments: None

There’s a lot to learn about business from commercials. Unfortunately, you can have the best idea or product out there, but it doesn’t matter if you don’t know how to spin it. I’ve seen the following commercials that really know how to spin something:

  • There was recently a commercial for restless leg syndrome that had “increased urgency to gamble” as a side effect.
  • Another drug commercial for a sleeping medicine warned that it might cause sleep walking with bouts of amnesia about the event.
  • Just yesterday a depression medicine cautioned that it might “increase the risk of death”.

So how do these companies get away with it? They know how to sell their product. Is it ethical? Probably not. However, it is a good lesson to learn to always read the fine print, or listen to the announcer when they start to talk absurdly fast.

Why is it that….?

Why is it that J.B. Fletcher can solve a murder based on whether someone is allergic to cilantro, but she can never tell when someone is in love with her? She always acts so oblivious to all these older gentleman who invite her to their estates on “Murder She Wrote”.

I guess it makes me feel a little bit better about the fact that I never know that I’m dating someone until they tell me. Then it’s like “Ohhhh we’ve been going out for three weeks? Ok”. I guess everyone is clueless in one area.

Frenemies

Filed under: Relationship Lessons • Comments: 1

laurenconrad.jpg“The Hills” may not seem like the best place to learn lessons about friendships. It seems like someone is always fighting with someone else. The show is basically one huge cat fight. However, we have learned one huge lesson from “The Hills”. If you don’t like your friend’s boyfriend, stop telling her about it, unless absolutely necessary. Otherwise your relationship will dissolve & the media will coin new annoying phrases like frenemies.

It happened with Lauren & Heidi, then Heidi & Lauren. It will probably happen between Lauren & Whitney, & Audrina & Lauren. Yes, there are some times when a friend needs to step in. It’s probably a good idea to make your opinion known at least once. However, girls don’t usually forget things like their friends saying “I hate your boyfriend”, so it doesn’t need to be repeated every twenty seconds. The way things are going, all of those girls are going to have to move out of LA because they will have too many frenemies there.
