Business Lessons learned from Ace of Cakes

I have more than a little crush on Duff Goldman from “Ace of Cakes”. This food network show follows a zany Baltimore bakery who builds amazing cakes, sometimes the cakes even have explosives in them. Here are some business lessons I have learned from them:

It’s not work when it’s fun. The bakery has done so well because they are willing to work well into the night. They do this because they love what they do. This makes them even more detailed oriented, so their cakes are even better. The bakery is a happy place full of light & laughter that people just want to spend time in, even the employees.

It’s not always about money. I’ve seen “Ace of Cakes” donate cakes to charities that are just as detailed & expensive as their regular cakes.

Think outside the box. They can turn anything into a cake, they don’t let the traditional cake decorating ideas get in their way.

Think inside the box. I was watching an episode of “Food Network Challenge” where Duff was the judge. The challenge was to build extreme cakes. Duff stooped several contestants from using fireworks in a dangerous way. It’s OK to be a mad scientist, as long as you are still a scientist.
