What I learned from Lorelai Gilmore

The question isn’t what I learned from watching Gilmore Girls. The question is what didn’t I learn from watching Gilmore Girls? I picked up on books to read music to listen to and formed a habit of always wearing a scarf even in the summer.

I especially like all of the business lessons that I learned from watching Gilmore Girls. On the shows women are either totally career orientated and completely inept at love or totally focused on their relationships. Either way we usually don’t get to see a lot of strong women in business. It was refreshing to see it Lorelei start her own business with her friends. It definitely gave me inspiration when I started my own business. I learned from Lorelei:

  • Be nice to everyone, even if it is just Kirk and he has some crazy idea. Take the time to listen because you never know what might pay off. If you don’t end up using their idea you have still made a friend & made people feel like their ideas are valuable.
  • It’s OK to have a nervous breakdown. I thought of business as don’t cry be strong. Lorelai cries, she gets frustrated, she breaks down, and then she moves on. She doesn’t have to stew over things because she gives herself time to wallow.
  • Don’t panic in front of guests & customers, even if there’s a fire, even if you don’t know what you’re doing. Even if you only have one guest, treat them special and be in control of the situation.
  • Celebrate everything. We all won’t make it. However, the most important lesson that I learned from watching Gilmore Girls is even if your company fails after two years use it will be a crazy ride for two years. Celebrate new challenges. Throw yourself a party when times are tough.
  • Most of all know who to trust, know where you can go to when you need to vent so that you can still put on a happy face and get your work done.

Something unusual that I’ve learned from Lorelai is to work with your friends, work with people you like, and trust and that you want to be around every day. If you aren’t working with your friends make those people your friends. To me Lorelai Gilmore is the perfect businesswoman . She’s strong, she’s feminine, she has her relationships in order, she’s practical while still being a dreamer, she’s good in a crisis and she’s exactly what I want to be in the business world.
